Gentle inclines to beaches are not a North Yorkshire thing: steepest, vertigo-inducing scary drops, handrails that suddenly disappear and slippery cobbles. Not for the faint hearted! We spent a day in Whitby and it was difficult for me if I’m honest.

Very quaint, lots of Victoriana, seaside gaiety shops and fish and chips. I managed to leave behind my stick (in the aquarium, and I got it back on retracing my steps) and my bottle of water (it was still where I left it and the shopkeeper said she hadn’t noticed it). Both retrieved after only a few minutes as I had realised that I had been missing something I needed.

The shops provided entertainment for me while the rest of the family took the 190 steps to the top of Whitby to the abbey ruins. I didn’t feel like I missed out: I got to shop for myself and buy some nice things. Ammonites are a family favourite these days.

We also did a touristy visit to the Dracula experience and the less said about that the better. All about the worst part of being alone in pitch black spaces and it causes me super anxiety. I need a little bit more light to navigate through unknown spaces. That said it really wasn’t a big issue as it was a little bit shorter than we anticipated and the scary part is the anticipated scares, rather than actual scares…

The nearby bookshop had the biggest selection of Dracula/Bram Stoker books and cards. Oh and ammonite graphics: that was what could be seen all round the North Yorkshire coast: geology. Rocks, rocks and ammonites.
