We’ve slipped back to the 1970s and we didn’t realise? 29,000 homes in this area lost power and the substation managed to get 9,000 back… but not before we had lit lots of candles and were debating a game or two. The power returned after a short hiatus but we were the lucky ones. It hasn’t happened on this scale for decades but you could see our power-driven lives and what we (the kids were not the only ones!) are used to now, as opposed to when I was little in Scotland.

We were glad of the cosy woodburner for sure. Probably it wouldn’t have affected the central heating but I’m not even certain as the thermostat is electrically controlled. But I was glad that I never stopped buying decorative candles and the birthday scented ones were really pleasant.

I had to visit the dentist this afternoon as well. Pain had crept up on me and I feared my Halloween sweeties had caused it? But amused by my comment the dentist showed me on xray how decay was occurring by the wires of my root canal, so it was not a sudden failure but had been a possibility for a while and could have been from the ‘deepness’ of the cavity and whether it had been scraped out enough. Eugh!
Back to the power… Everything didn’t ping back on when the grid returned. This would have caused a power surge and someone in our house had the understanding of electrics to switch off a few things. My hubby is more practical about things like that. But I did pop next door to check on an elderly neighbour whose son had helped her in the dark but shot off when the power returned. We had a chat and it reinforced that we need to check on everyone more regularly.

I have to finish a job application and the power cut stopped it from happening last night, so that’ll be the task for the morning as well as some training I didn’t finish last week. There is busyness outside if I get really bored! But is it too cold? And I have phone calls to make to check on family. Don’t procrastinate!
