August is either too hot or too dry (usually)… but a road trip to Scotland is rarely too hot!

I have stuffed the bin full again. But it’s not full of stuff that wilts is it?

And we headed to Scotland via Yorkshire this year and stopped off at Fountains Abbey. A historic monument we thought we had visited previously but realised we hadn’t arrived early enough so the visit had covered the Studley Royal gardens.

Fountains Abbey is stunning. Paths and walks allowed us to take it all in in about an hour and a half. The visitors centre was also a reason for my architectural pilgrimage in the twenty or so years ago we had stopped. It’s beautiful too in a certain decade of architectural greats of the end of the twentieth century. But the light this time of day , late afternoon, added something to this visit.

And we stayed the night not far away. This year’s trip was to be different for many reasons and not only for the lack of a pooch in the car…
