Scottish words are fabulous, fandabbidosy in fact! So books dealing with the entomology of Scottish language, and plant names, really floats my boat! Quite difficult to take pics of open books so bear with me if I haven’t managed to square them up.

But another book with lovely drawings and humour, illustrating the weird and wonderful Scots/Gaelic and English terms for flora across the lands and beaches of the UK. Compiled over an extended period it’s a joyful look at the multitude of ways the people of a small island country can have many variations of the same plants.

And it furthers my understanding of the differing names my parents used and my mother-in-law’s confusion over her anglicised terms varying so significantly…

When you have a starting point of Navelwort or Fumitory, or Deadnettle, you can imagine for a second where the variations might lead and still be surprised! A book to delight me for months to come, if not years!
